8/22 Monday: welcome! distribute and begin discussing course syllabus
8/24 Wednesday: finish discussing course syllabus (how to pass English 100S)
HW Due: one page (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font): what has been your experience with writing so far?
Week Two
8/29 Monday: CLASS CANCELLED
8/31 Wednesday: Timed Essay #1 (this is a warm-up/practice writing assignment - full credit as long as you do it)
HW Due: syllabus contract (last day to receive credit); bring a small/large blue/green book to class for the timed writing (whichever size/color is available at the bookstore or Beach Hut is fine)
Week Three
9/5 Monday: LABOR DAY -- CAMPUS CLOSED
9/7 Wednesday: introduction to active/critical reading; summarizing a text
HW Due: "Reporting Live from Tomorrow" by Daniel Gilbert (read the introductory section; stop when you get to "Super-Replicators" section); write a one paragraph summary of the introductory section (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font)
Week Four
9/12 Monday: how to summarize; distribute and introduce Essay Assignment #1
HW Due: read the "Super-Replicators" section in "Reporting Live from Tomorrow" by Daniel Gilbert; write 2 paragraphs: in the 1st paragraph, summarize/explain Gilbert's concept of super-replicators,: and in the 2nd paragraph, identify and explain 2 original examples of super-replicators not mentioned in Gilbert's article
9/14 Wednesday: finish discussing Essay Assignment #1 prompt; review summarizing
Week Five
9/19 Monday: "Where there's a will..." (advanced reading comprehension - we will apply the concepts to mastering the Gilbert text)
9/21 Wednesday: discuss and analyze core reading ("Super-Replicators"
Week Six
9/26 Monday: coherence (essential structure/organization concepts)
9/28 Wednesday:
HW Due: Essay #1 Rough Draft (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, full length)
Week Seven
10/3 Monday: the introduction (purposes and techniques)
10/5 Wednesday: critique sample introductions; return and discuss Essay #1 drafts

10/10 Monday: revising Essay #1 drafts; topic sentences; MLA format
10/12 Wednesday: collect Essay #1; Essay #1 self-reflection
HW Due: Essay #1 (please include rough draft and "Super-Replicators" summary/response)

12/5 Monday: portfolio finishing touches; timed essay preparation (25 minutes)
HW Due: on the back of the 2 sample paragraphs I passed out, write a brief explanation of which paragraph is better (in terms of writing technique) and why
12/7 Wednesday: timed essay (50 minutes); turn in completed portfolios!
12/12 Monday - 12/17 Saturday: FINAL EXAMINATIONS
Your Final Exam is Monday, December 12 10:15am - 12:15pm
Note: As your Final Portfolio is essentially your final exam for English 100S, there is no test or assignment scheduled for this final exam period. Rather, I will have your graded Final Portfolios for you to pick up and discuss during the exam period.
